Czech and Slovak oral history project

Published: November 7, 2010

Progress-Index

To the Editor:

The Prince George-Petersburg area has a rich cultural history. More than 100 years ago, Czech and Slovak settlers came to the area to add a new chapter to its history. They established farming communities such as New Bohemia, Begonia and others.

As a young person born and raised in the area I've always had a sense of what my ancestors did, but not the full picture of their experiences. This fall I'm embarking on an academic research paper to document community elders' recollections through interviews. These transcriptions will be incorporated into my research, but more importantly serve as a record for future generations.

If you are of Czech or Slovak descent age 80 or more and want to share your story, please write to me at the address below. I would enjoy hearing about your experiences. Bruce A. Vlk, 77 Bunny Lane, Faber, VA 22938
